SB 840
Senate Bill 840 would provide a single-payer health system for California
that would replace all private health insurers. All residents of California
would be covered. Coverage would include inpatient and outpatient services,
laboratory services, mental health services, prescription drugs, vision
and dental care, adult day care, chiropractic, and 100 days of skilled
nursing care after a hospitalization.
Changes in job or marital status, or geographic location in the state would
not change your coverage. In other words, if someone lost or changed their
job they would still have the same insurance. People could choose any participating
provider in the system. Health care providers and facilities would receive
fair reimbursement for their services while administrative costs will be lower.
As it is, insurance companies very frequently deny visits, procedures, and
medications that they were supposed to cover.
The bill would be funded by the current California public programs, such as
Medicare and Medi-Cal. No new spending would be required as it is funded by
money already spent on health care.

HR 676
HR 676 establishes a national health insurance program that would supply
health care to all US residents, improving and expanding the existing
Medicare program to cover everyone. Physicians for a National Health Program
(www.pnhp.org) estimate that it would save
us over $286 billion a year.
Whereas annual family premiums are upwards of $9,000, under the plan a
family of three would be paying about $1600 a year. The cost for employers
would be reduced greatly (i.e. an employer who is currently contributing
$2,600 per employee for poor benefits and making $30,000 a year would
now pay only $1,155 per year).
HR 676 would cover primary care, inpatient and outpatient care as
well as emergency care, prescription drugs, long term care, mental health,
durable medical equipment, eye care and dentistry, chiropractic,
and substance abuse treatment.
Patients would have their choice of doctor, hospital, clinic, and practice.
This program would be funded by a tax on all employers
and employees of 3.3%, and a 5% tax on the top 5% of income earners.
